Michaela Coel is a large-scale commissioned portrait created for a private collector.
Working at A1 scale allowed the portrait to move beyond simple likeness. Fine graphite transitions build the subtleties of the face, while deeper charcoal creates the contrast, depth and presence that define the finished work.
Every area was developed by hand through repeated layers of observation, mark-making and tonal adjustment. The eyes, skin, hair and structure of the face were gradually built over 120 hours using charcoal and graphite.
The finished portrait is concerned not only with physical resemblance, but with capturing the presence and individuality of its subject.
Created as a private commission, the original belongs to a private collection and is not available for sale or reproduction.
